ANNE WINTER
BRITISH RAIL'S FIRST WOMAN TRAIN DRIVER
↓

My name is Anne Winter and I was the first woman to qualify as a train driver on British Rail, in February 1983.
This website has been created to set out that history accurately, to explain how confusion later arose over that fact and to share some of the story of my railway career and life outside it.
After I qualified, there was considerable press interest, but I chose not to pursue a public profile. Over time, that relative quietness, combined with later media appearances by others, helped create a widespread but inaccurate impression about who had been first.
Now that I am retired and have the time to do so, I want to ensure that the historical record is accurate and properly supported by documentary evidence.
